Balancing Free Speech and Security: The Case of Albert Ojwang

In June 2025, the tragic death of blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody       sparked nationwide outrage in Kenya. Kenya's president says blogger died 'at the hands of the police'

Ojwang was arrested for allegedly defaming a deputy police chief online and died under suspicious circumstances, with autopsy findings indicating signs of assault.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation, and five officers have been identified in connection with the incident.

This incident underscores the delicate balance between upholding national security and protecting the fundamental right to freedom of expression. 

While security policies are essential to maintain public order, they must not be used as tools to suppress dissent or intimidate individuals expressing their views.

The Kenyan government's response to this case will be a critical test of its commitment to human rights and democratic principles.

As the investigation unfolds, it is imperative that authorities ensure transparency and accountability. 

The public's trust in security institutions hinges on their ability to uphold the rule of law and protect citizens' rights. 

The balance between security and freedom of speech is not just a policy issue but a cornerstone of Kenya's democratic fabric.
